When repair no longer makes sense, a full replacement resets the clock with a correctly sized, seamless system.
A full replacement means removing and disposing of the old system, inspecting and repairing fascia as needed, and installing new seamless aluminum gutters formed to your roofline with properly sized downspouts. It's an opportunity to correct sizing mistakes from a prior installation — for example upgrading from 5-inch to 6-inch gutters on a large or steep roof, or adding downspouts where there weren't enough to keep up with heavy rain.
| Material | Typical lifespan | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum (seamless) | 20–30+ years | Most common choice for Michigan homes; resists rust, reasonably priced |
| Galvanized steel | 15–25 years | Stronger but prone to rust over time once the coating wears |
| Vinyl | 10–15 years | Lower cost but can become brittle in cold winters and crack |
| Copper | 50+ years | Premium option, develops a natural patina, higher upfront cost |
We recommend scheduling replacements outside of the depths of winter when possible, but a genuinely failing gutter system shouldn't wait for ideal weather — a system that's overflowing or pulling away from the house can lead to fascia rot, siding damage, and ice dam contributing factors that get more expensive the longer they sit. We work through the fall and winter as conditions allow.
