The gutter only does half the job — downspouts decide where all that water actually ends up.
A well-installed gutter run that empties into an undersized, poorly placed, or clogged downspout still leaves you with water pooling near the foundation — one of the most common causes of wet basements and crawlspace moisture in older Lansing-area homes. Getting downspouts right is just as important as the gutter installation itself.
Water pooling at the base of a downspout during rain, visible gaps at elbow joints, and staining or erosion in the soil directly below a downspout outlet are all signs it's time for a look. If your basement or crawlspace has ever had a musty smell or damp walls after a heavy rain, downspout placement is one of the first things worth checking — see our post on how gutters prevent foundation damage.
